TURNING large panels

It may be necessary under certain circumstances to process the large panel from both sides in the machining centre. The board is turned after a pass for this purpose and fed into the machining centre again. To avoid risky turning with a crane, Kallfass has developed a turning device that can also pick up large panels without breaking them and lay them gently on the conveyor.

QUALITY SCANNER

Quality scanners are used for automated assessment of the quality of dry or moist timber. In a single scanning, multisensors examine the surface of the wood from all four sides and classify the timber according to individual quality parameters. Cracks, discolouring, wane, etc. are detected and localised. All further production steps can be rationalised and optimised as a result.

SINGLE FEED UNIT

The quality of individual boards cannot be assessed or measured without precise cycling in. Both the desired production speed and the homogeneity of the timber determine the cycling in process in this respect. With a consistent board thickness and production speed of maximum 80 cycles/min, individual boards are backed up and, using retaining pawls in combination with a plunger and acceleration conveyor, transferred individually to the next conveyor.

A soon as the thickness of the boards differs or higher production speeds are to be run, powerful TongLoader® units with a gripper system are used. Tong Loader® units can cycle in boards at a speed of up to 240 workpieces/min and are suitable for wet, dry and planed timbers.

WANE SCANNER

Wane scanners are generally used prior to sorting. In addition to visual detection of the wane to be removed from timber, scanning also determines the length, width and thickness and stores these dimensions as information for subsequent trimming.

MOISTURE MEASUREMENT

The water content of the timber is measured in mere seconds and without contact during moisture measurement. The analyser can be integrated at a flexible point in the production process. In the event of exceeding or undershooting the defined moisture level, the boards are marked behind the measuring head and rejected if necessary. Only timber that conforms to the desired classification is processed further, ensuring a consistently high quality standard.

WARP MEASUREMENT

Following drying, the degree of warping of a board is measured with the scanner system and the board turned over if necessary before further processing. This ensures an efficient, continuous process sequence.

Top chain pressure unit

Saw units of cross-cut saws can be optionally equipped with a top chain pressure unit that ensures greater process reliability in the event of warped timber. The saw unit and conveyor chains are synchronised to run together and pull the workpieces continuously towards the cutting blade. The chains are sheathed in rubber to avoid surface damage to planed workpieces.

Mitre cut

If workpieces should be mitred, this can be achieved in a single process step with the multiple circular cross-cut saw – mitre cutting, so to speak. The saw units are equipped with an additional saw blade setting for this purpose that permits mitre cutting at different cutting angles up to a maximum of 30°. The maximum cutting height at this inclination is 100 mm, and the minimum cutting length 800 mm.
